Medium-carbon steel slabs
Medium-carbon steel slabs have up to 0.34% of carbon and higher strength and toughness than low-carbon steel. They are used in structures in general, in the civil construction, automotive and capital goods industries. These slabs are also intended for low and medium strength ship components.
Low-carbon steel slabs
Slabs with 0.02% to 0.08% carbon. These slabs have low mechanical resistance, hardness, high flexibility, toughness and good weldability. Diverse automotive parts, profiles and structural pipes, civil construction, and tinplate cans are some of their applications.
Ultra-low carbon steel slabs
These are slabs with less than 0.0090% of carbon content. They have excellent plasticity and thus are used in the manufacturing of parts submitted to conformation and extra deep stamping, with a bold and complex design. These slabs are used extensively in the automotive industry and manufacturing of household appliances such as refrigerators, stoves, microwaves and freezers.
HSLA (high-strength low-alloy) steel
Micro-particles of alloying elements, such as niobium, titanium and vanadium, are added to this steel, which undergoes thermo-mechanical treatments. As a result, it has higher strength than conventional carbon steel. Other characteristics are flexibility, good formability and weldability. Therefore, it is mainly used in shipbuilding, oil platforms, civil construction and silos; wind and power transmission towers; mining equipment; vehicle stringers and in the capital goods industry.
This is a type of steel certified by the American Petroleum Institute (API), an association for the oil and natural gas industry that’s responsible for creating rules and procedures for such industry. In order to receive the API classification, the steel must meet strict specifications, such as flow limit, strength limit, sturdiness at low temperature, internal sanity and chemical composition. Typical applications are pipelines and tanks in the oil industry and offshore platforms (fixed and floating).
These are steels with carbon in the 0.08-0.13% range which stand out due to the special care taken in the casting (solidification process) to avoid surface defects. They are intended for general structural uses in the civil construction, automotive industry, capital goods industry and medium-strength naval components.
